Get Hallowed for Halloween!

Okay, so here's my contest for HALLOWED on Halloween. I am seriously so excited about this. I am going to be giving away four (count them, FOUR) ARCs of Hallowed!

There are 2 ways to win:

#1 Download this, the US cover for Hallowed. Aw. Isn't it nice?

Then, using Photoshop or Paint or whatever artsy program you like, dress up my cover for Halloween. Let's pretend, instead, that this is a horror book. Instead of "aw," we want, "ew!" The funnier, grosser, and/or most Halloweenlike, the better. (But nothing, you know, truly obscene or something that would traumatize a person under 12).

I'm not great with Photoshop, but I had all kinds of fun coming up with this example:

Bwa ha ha. I love it.

Anyway, mess with my cover. Then email it to me at writercynthiahand@gmail.com. Make sure the image is a decent size, since I've had trouble posting super large pictures or pictures in a strange format here before.

For those of you who are not artistically inclined, here is method #2 for winning your very own Hallowed ARC.

Let's read the description of Hallowed, shall we?:

For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose—the task she was put on earth to accomplish—is not as straightforward as she thought. Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she was supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

Awesome, isn't it? Makes you just want to jump right in and read. But now (you guessed it) you get to rewrite the Hallowed description. What if Hallowed were a horror novel? You can either write it like a really messed up, scary sequel to Unearthly, such as:

For months part-demon Clara Gardner trained to start the raging forest fire from her visions and murder the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott during the blaze. . .

or you can toss the original story and start from scratch, using just the cover and the title, like:

Six years ago, Clara Gardner drowned in the icy waters of Jackson Lake right after the Halloween dance.  For 364 days of the year, she rests peacefully in her coffin as a corpse. But every year on Halloween night she comes to life and claws her way out of the grave, determined to find Christian, the boy who jilted her, and literally eat his heart out . . .

Leave your description in the comments below (not on Goodreads or on Facebook, please, but here). Have fun with it! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I will award ARCs to the 2 best covers and the 2 best descriptions, along with a few other little tricks and treats of my own. On Halloween night, sometime in between taking my kids trick-or-treating and lapsing into a candy coma, I will announce the winners.

*Yes, I will ship internationally, thanks for asking, although I only have ARCs in English.

Good luck, and Happy Halloween!

Every fours years Clara Gardner, a vengeful ghost, goes after anyone who cross her territory. Usually she'll even find one to bring with her to keep her company, that is until Christian Prescott came along.

He's the one that got away and Clara is livid. She'll do whatever she can to get him, even though her time is almost up. October 31st is her deadline and she is ready...

Clara Gardner thought she was training as an Angel of Light(White Wing). She thought her mission was to save people from a tragic death but in reality she is half angel and half vampire. Now she must fight her lustful desires to drink Christian's blood and renounce her vampire inheritance or give in and live forever as a Dark Wing Vampire sucking light and life from those she was once destined to save.Tucker holds the key that will unlock the truth to who she really is and her only way to renouncing her dark side and becoming a full White Wing Angel.

In the deep, dark pits of hell, Clara Gardner knew it was time she made her choice.
At midnight of October 31st, her sixteenth birthday she would have to decide one way or another which path she would take.

Born from two different sides of a coin, light and dark she always thought her choice was an easy one. She would choose dark, of course she would. It's what she was born to do. Lead. It's what her father wanted her to do.
But then, the mysterious, sexy and charming, Christian Prescott burst into her life and made her question everything she thought she knew about herself and about what she wanted.
He wasn't of her world. He was light. She was dark, sort-of, but his radiant glow of light that shined off him went straight to her heart.
They may be different, but he gave her the right to form a choice.
But choosing.. one way or another, she would lose someone.
Would the choice be worth risking her birthright? Or would it give her something in exchange -- like, eternal love?

It was time to choose, and she hoped it would be the right one.

Clara Gardner always knew she was meant for greatness. Following in the footsteps of her Black Wing heritage, something her own death bound mother shuned. Her only real decision is who to let live when her promised day finally comes. No one can stop the decisions Clara makes. Neither the muderous bad boy Christian Prescot or the rebelous anchor Tucker.
Who will survive and can love really over come all? The answer will forever be HECK NO!!!

Before shadows or demons first walked on the hell biten Earth there were three kinds of people. The demons, the half-demons, and the food. Clara Gardner is a half demon and she wil take over the hell biten world before her ancestors will even be able to rise. The only thing in her way is the Food. Tucker and Christian always thinking they know what she will do. They want to 'help' her. She wants to eat them.

Watch as the murders stack up and as love changes someone into something else completely.

She´s waited such a long time for this day. It was October 31. Halloween. Night of demons and vampires. Her night. This was the night to finally fulfil her purpose. Clara Gardner, supernaturally beautiful and pale faced vampire, who had the ability to switch between dimensions - has trained for this day for years, mentally and physically. It was the darkest night of this year too, no moon, no stars, just blackness. Together with her mate Christian Prescott, scarred and red-faced king of demons, she´d do it tonight. Standing on top of a mountain near Jackson lake she´d raise her hand and with her high pitched scream a gap in space and time would appear like tongues of flames out of nowhere. Through the tunnel-like flame hole she would be able to see right into Cynthia Hands home, watching Cynthia writing at her desk while she was being completely oblivious to what was coming for her. Christian Prescott writhed in agony as he read Clara´s thoughts: Tonight Clara would torture Cynthia painfully to death if Tucker could not be her boyfriend anymore in the next book. He was determined to avert this, he was supposed to be her soulmate for eternity…

Clara has been waiting her whole life for this day - Halloween - when the Black Wings would rise from the Underworld to take what was rightfully theirs . . . Earth. She awaits the time when she can summon them out of hiding and reek havoc on the world that had long ago turned its back on her. And when Clara meets Christian, an aloof sexy miscrient hiding deep in the woods of her town, she finds it ironically satisfying that he shares her desire to bring revenge to all those around them.

Until Tucker, a gorgeous hard-faced White Wing, suddenly appears. Clara sees him everywhere she goes - in the streets, at school, in her mirror - and feels a drastic pull towards him so deep it leaves a dark hollowness in her stomach. Tucker is everything Clara must hate, and Christian is everything she loves, but Clara finds those two worlds colliding the closer it gets to Halloween.

And worse still: Tucker was sent to provent the ceremony from taking place. Now, drawn between her duty to her own kind and the eternal love she feels for Tucker, Clara must chose.

Either way, Clara will be caught in the middle of a catastrophic war between good and evil, the likes of which this world has never seen.

Here's my entry:

Clara Gardner wasn't dead.

But every zombie hunter wished she was. Dubbed the legendary Severed Hand because of her missing right arm, Clara was one of the most notorious undead beings to haunt the Earth. She ate hearts and stole hands, as if to compensate for the she'd lost; according to rumors, she didn't even chew before she swallowed. There wasn't a single hunter who had managed to stop her wrath.

Until Tucker. Gorgeous, golden, and absolutely determined, Tucker Avery was one of the best zombie hunters out there... except he was dead too. As a zombie-hunting zombie, he was trusted by neither the dead nor the alive. Not that it mattered much to him. After watching his family die at the hands of a zombie and then being infected by the same guy, Tucker's only goal was to rid the world of all undead beings -- and then himself.

So it was natural that he'd take it upon himself to destroy the one-handed girl who haunted the boonies. Only problem? There were some things about the mysterious Severed Hand that not even the gory stories told.

Like the fact that, once upon a time when they were both alive, Tucker and Clara had known each other.

And she remembered him.

TA DA! I hope you like it! :)

Clara never thought that a knock on her door could drastically change everything she's ever known.

It's Halloween, the night where the veil between the realms becomes thinnest. When the creatures of the night can come out to play. And poor Clara, who isn't out Trick-or-Treating or partying with her friends, is stuck handing out candy to little princesses and superheros. When Clara goes to answer the door for what she hopes to be the last time, she hears it. A voice. The voice. Tucker's voice on the other side of the door.
Normally, seeing her next-door-neighbor wouldn't be so strange, except for the fact that he's been dead for the last 3 weeks. Or so she thought. It turns out that Tucker has a reason for being gone and a reason for why he never has to dress up for Halloween. He's a demon and he's been running from something. Something more malevolent than anything the Earth has seen before, and that something is now after Clara. Because Clara has a secret that no other creature, in any of the realms could possibly know, but she doesn't remember what it is.
Unbelievably out of her element, Clara embarks on a Halloween journey with Christian, her loving boyfriend, and the dangerous, sexy Tucker, that will send her through the fires of hell itself, but will she be able to get out before the veils seal?

Clara used to be a normal girl, but when she gets caught in a forest fire, her life changes forever. The boy that started the blaze died in the flames and now he’s taken up a residence inside Clara.

His name is Christian Prescott.

Every day, Clara fights to keep a hold on her sanity. Christian creeps on the edges of her mind, waiting for a miniscule crack in the wall she put up so he can slip in and take control of Clara’s thoughts, her words, her actions. On Halloween, the demon-boy tells Clara, he will seize control of her brain and kill every human in Jackson Hole.

His first victim? Clara’s beloved boyfriend, Tucker.

Clara’s mind grows weaker with every day that she has to fight Christian. Halloween is drawing near. Clara must conquer her inner demon to save the town from what could be a greater tragedy than the fire that started it all.

I mean, that wasn't so bad. No rampage or thirst for bloodshed. Right? Yeah, it's all good. And it better stay that way. Right, my life's never been that easy. Why would it start now? Bring it on Christian, bring it on. Just... leave... Tucker... alone... (ha, cause that's totally gonna happen)

Clara Gardner thought it was all over. The forest fire had blazed, Christian was alive, and Tucker was safe. She thought that it all ended with the fire that was her purpose. But one day, she wakes up to find her mother and brother crying in their bedrooms. As she tries to find out what is wrong, she discovers that they can't see or hear her! What's worse, Tucker, her handsome boyfriend, doesn't seem to be picking up his phone when she calls. The only one who seems to be paying attention to her is Christian, who claims to be having the same problems. As they watch their families and friends grieve over something Christian and Clara can't understand, it all leads to one question: what really happened that day of the fire?

Wings and a task she was put on earth to fulfill was not all part-angel Clara was given. Clara has another side—Caroline. Trapped in a goodie-two-shoes body for far too long, Caroline is ready to come out. Unaware of an angel getting more than one task, much less a half angel, Clara is unprepared and completely oblivious to her other side she is required to keep confined…and the need for human blood her body-jacker needs in order to completely takeover. In the eyes of Tucker, Clara is just an ordinary girl. A little on the dorky side at times but her quirkiness is definitely attractive…and Caroline has him just where she wants him.

Clara Gardner's boyfriend, Christian Prescott was murdered. 6 years later, Clara has moved on with her new boyfriend, Tucker Avery. On Halloween night, Clara is possessed by Christian's soul. Why? Will Clara and Tucker survive? Will love remain strong?

For part-nightwalker, Clara Gardner, falling to sleep is like being thrown into the very jaws of dreamland hell. It has been one month since that fateful day, when her love for the human Tucker, ruled her actions, and made her turn her back on her destiny to save fellow nightwalker, Christian Prescott, from the raging night mists that were steaming across the land from forest to glen. Now each day, when her human-self struggles to keep sleep away, she is dragged down into the deepest of nightmares wherein she is forced to watch over and over again, the horrific mists consume Christian's nightwalker being, slowly melting and molding him into one of the darkest of zombie demons known to man, whose sole purpose is to unite all things evil under a banner of destruction. For Clara, she knows these nightmares are visions of what is to be if she does not find a way to undo the events of that fateful day. Although her love for Tucker is strong, she fears it will forever be tainted by the knowledge she created the darkest of zombie demons who will eventually destroy all she loves.

Who knew messing up your purpose would have such adverse consequences?

Clara Gardner now faces her hardest challenge in her capture by Black Wings, led by none other than Christian Prescott. But angered by Clara’s refusal to work with them, Christian does the only thing he can: taking control of Clara. Possessing her body and mind, he sends her on quests to track down and kill White Wings, filling her with black magic that makes it impossible for Clara to be beaten. As fear and panic spread through the angel-bloods, Clara must find a way to escape, or face killing her family. Little does Clara realize that the reason behind this stands with her mother, whose long forgotten betrayal is slowly resurfacing.

Only in the apex of the Hunter’s Moon will Clara’s full purpose on Earth be revealed.

Clara Gardner is like a book, constantly judged by her angelic appearance by everyone around her. Unfortunately for them, she is anything but. Part heaven, but mostly hell, she was once the most feared of the devil’s minions. That is, until they learnt of her angelic heritage. Now, living as an outcast in human society, she must cause despair to retain her strength and immortality. Cunning and manipulative, she easily drains all hope from the people surounding her....that is, until she meets Christian and Tucker. One boy clings to his hope, the other to his despair, both with a strength which surpasses even her own. Clara isn’t giving up, no matter the consequences, but soon finds that she is no longer the most terrifying thing in all the worlds, not by a long shot. And this new evil is heading straight for them all...

Okay, so my entry is an excerpt from Hallowed, to be put on the book’s back cover in lieu of a plot description. :]

It’s the middle of the day. Some people prefer to work during the dark hours of night, but I like the day. People are smart enough to be suspicious when it’s dark, but when the sun’s up they let down their guard. Like today’s victim, a young girl with unwashed hair and scabs on her knees. She sees my smile and my trustworthy face and she follows me through the woods, to the abandoned house, without hesitation. We’re up the steps, in the door, and it’s closed behind us with a creak. Grimy light filters in through the windows. At first she smiles, showing me she’s not scared. But then there comes a thumping noise from above us: steps, coming down the stair case. The girl screams and turns for the door, but I’m leaning against it, blocking her way. My smile is different now, and she can finally see that. I watch the realization dawn on her, the terror sink into her bones as the steps come closer. She's finally scared, but that won't save her now. I laugh at her fear, as Tucker comes down the stairs with his knife. She should have known. She should have known not to trust me, even in the daylight.

Angel of Destruction, Clara Gardner has just proven herself to all of the Angels of Destruction. Young as she is just as diabolical as them. She was successful in causing the forest fire that raged through Wyoming. She left her boyfriend, Tucker, in the fire to burn but after a promising vision of more something even more horrid and gruesome on the horizon, she made a last second decision to save his life. Tucker would have been better off dying in the fire, for now Clara is reuniting with the devilishly handsome, Demon, Christian Prescott, the boy who helped her train to begin a raging fire. Now the Demon and Angel of Destruction are joining forces to summon the Black Wings. The Black Wings are an ancient society of Demons and Angels of Destruction that are responsible for the all darkest nightmares found in the world. The worst forest fire in the history of Wyoming is only amateur at best to them. The Black Wings take the very souls of humans, draining the bodies of every essence. Looking up to the Black Wings, Clara becomes co pletely demonic with a bloody thirst. Anyone close to Clara will die, and she is okay with that. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, for in her wake lies heaps of corpse completely hallowed.

Clara Gardner - a malignant, reprobate and cunning angel - has always looked forward to the sinister day of Halloween, treated as a festival by the oblivious humans, when she'll get sent down to earth from her abhorrent home of hell, to fulfil her mission.

For dark angels like her, Halloween marks the day of the ominous sacrifice ritual - the day when she can break the curse of the jack-o-lantern that has been bound on her master, metamorphosing him into a pumpkin; now she must track down the golden boy that holds the key to it all, whose heart will have to be eaten out...

However, as she descend the boundaries of hell and earth, she finds herself falling hard for the dashing, charming and soon-to be-her-victim Tucker Avery that makes her insides melt.

With Halloween and the impending ritual looming on the horizon, she must hasten to complete her task, as they've sent Christian after her - one of the most loyal and brutal comrades, to make sure she doesnt waver. But will she be able to go against her heart, and accomplish the mission that she was sent for, even as it makes her soul tear apart or will she defy everything and save Tucker and herself from the apocalyptic repercussion that awaits her?

My entry:

Clara Gardener a stony Black Wing angel with so much purpose is reborn every Halloween. Chained to wooden stakes for a laugh, (they thought she was some kind of demonic vampire witch on the hunt for innocent flesh, haha playful brains), Clara arises from the frosty aura of death each year whilst being prone to misery – rewritten every October – Clara thirsts for the day she’s reunited with the searingly striking Tucker Avery. Eternity has painstakingly passed, yet Clara’s forlorn soul never tires, she desires that same magnetic jerk to her heart, the one where he's so close she almost faints from the swift dizziness that overcomes her. But of course, is always interrupted by the constant annoyance of the forest blaze nightmare. She loves Tucker doesn’t she? Then why has Christian suddenly crept into her heart? Somehow she feels there’s more that meets the eye coming from both of them. She’ll die all over again just to clear the bewilderment eternally seeping into her mind. That, and then some.

'Are the flames of hell hotter than Tucker?'

Last Halloween, Clare made the portentous wish which set in motion an eldritch chain of events. Raised in hell, Clara was content with her fiery home with ghastly wailing for music and pitchforks for utencils. As a black wing, it was mere curiosity that led her to ask for a visit to Earth for Trick or Treating on Halloween. However, what Clara didnt forsee was her momentous meeting with the infuriating, yet charming Tucker Avery. What was supposed to be a one day trip turns into a long affair of romantic encounters which leave Clara breathless. Even as she falls in love, knowing that she is breaking the rules, she wonders if its really possible to fall from hell too.

Now with another halloween looming on the horizon, the egregious consequences of her rebellion catch up to her. The nefarious and malevolent black wings have threatened to kill her only angel firiend: Christian, who once saved her from a deadly fire.(ironic since they lived in hell!) Forced to turn into a deceptive spy that was her nature and betray Tucker by stealing the humans' secrets, she ruminated on her options.

Opening up a portal to hell on Halloween would not only lead to the slaughter of humans, but also end in devastation for her and Tucker. but refusing would be signing the death warrant for Christian. Torn between the guy that she loved and the guy that she loves, Clara realises that this war between hell and earth will result in vicious reverberations. And the clock is ticking for the inexorable Halloween masacre...

Clara Gardner knew her Purpose would take her to places she'd never expect, push her to her breaking point...but she never imagined her choices regarding it would lead her to this.
Chritian Prescott, the alluring angel whom she succeeded in saving.
Tucker Avery, the handsome, rugged, and utterly normal seeming young man who now knows her secret.
Clara thought she made the right choice, but is Tucker all he seems? Is the Purpose really simply about saving-and then falling in love with-Christian? And what will Clara do now that Tucker's darkest secret has been revealed?

Last Halloween there was a knock at the door that changed Clara Gardner’s life forever. She thought it was little kids coming to get candy but was she wrong. The guy in a dark hoody, dark jeans knocked her on the floor; he was at least six foot tall and had about 45 pounds on her. He then killed her and she made a deal with herself that every Halloween she would come back to find out who killed her and if it could have anything to do with the pictures that keep popping up in her head about Christian Prescott. Her soul will not be able to rest in peace until she finds out why she is drawn to Christian and if he is the one that killed her. Or if it was her next door neighbor Tucker who called two days before she was murdered and said, “She will get what is coming to her for being mean to him last year in gym.” But Clara only has 24 hour to find out who killed her before time is out and she will have to wait until next Halloween....

Half-ghoul Clara Gardner had reluctantly accepted that consuming human flesh was necessary for her survival. After all, her ghoul community Elders told everyone that they could only feed off of criminals. But after stumbling across the grisly remains of a secret sacrifice—or in other terms, the murders of her innocent ghoul father and human mother—her entire life unraveled until it dangled by a bloody thread. Desperate to escape being drawn further into the hell of part-ghouls and the network of lies the Elders wove—or worse yet, becoming their next victim—she fled the community with her childhood ghoul friend Christian Prescott. But living in disguise among humans posed unforeseen threats, like falling for the gentle human Tucker Avery despite all of Christian’s warnings. When Clara reveals her true identity to Tucker, breaking one of the most sacred ghoul rules, chaos ensues. The week before Samhain, the furious Elders track her down and kidnap both Tucker and Christian, issuing an ultimatum: one of the boys must die for her crimes, and she will have to choose the survivor. Who will Clara rescue from the same gruesome fate that awaited her parents—the ghoul boy who risked his life to run away with her, or the human boy who introduced her to the brighter side of humanity?

Will the love that Clara has for Tucker be enough to save him from this dark evening or will he just be another snack? Enjoy reading this daunting squeal, when Angels turn predator and boyfriends are on the menu.

As time being a Hollow increases, Clara finds herself waking up every night to find a gory mess--blood staining her hands, her face, everything.

And the blood isn’t her own.

This isn’t the only strange thing happening in Jackson Hole. Every morning a citizen is found dead, in the exact same fashion: Chest torn out, deep enough to get to the heart. No weapons found, as if the person tore through the body with their own hands.
